Diffusion is a soundscape performance based on spatial music that explores the harmony and relation between three loudspeakers and live musicians. 

 

Inspired by audible and visual indication, musicians improvised music mainly focused on the sound's direction and physicality. The audience can experience the acoustic change and sound diffusion by the movement of musicians.

 

One of the vital aims of this project was the amplification of musicians' creativity and originality. 

This idea came from my personal experiences as a violinist. Since being a classical musician, I had questioned myself whether I am a performer or a mere executor of the commands written by the original composers. 

As a performer, I sought more opportunities to infuse my musicality and creativity into the performance.

Instead of focusing on maintaining the traditional performance style, I took 'improvisation' as a performance method for three live musicians and created an audible-visible notation for this project.

In this performance, musicians were not given written music to play but audio clips and moving graphic images to perform. These audio clips played through three loudspeakers located in three positions at the performance space and took a role as a conductor and performers alongside three live musicians. 

The collaborator, Freddie Hong, who is the media artist, created a moving graphic image based on these audio clips. 

Through this unconventional notation for classical musicians, they were able to push the boundaries of traditional classical music to amplify their creativity and musicality beyond the written music.

There were nine concerts through three days, and each performance has been different and unique because of improvisation, which responded to space, audience and time by musicians.
